Find out more…The AIDS Quilt will be displayed at George Mason University on Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 (the Johnson Center, Dewberry Hall, Fairfax, Virginia campus) to commemorate World AIDS Day! Prominent entertainers, speakers, and public officials will kick-off a week-long series of activities on campus to highlight AIDS awareness, prevention, incidence, and support. Washington, DC has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS incidence and mortality in the nation, and HIV infection rates have been growing throughout the US and across the globe.
To raise AIDS awareness, a large section of the AIDS quilt (up to 1,200 square feet) will be displayed in the Johnson Center along with an exciting slate of programs, speakers, performers, educational activities, and exhibits to emphasize the importance of HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, research, and support for people living with AIDS. Several major organizations, such as the National Minority AIDS Council, the National Association for People Living With AIDS, the National Institutes of Health, the Entertainment Industries Council, the Metro DC Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, the Whitman Walker Clinic, the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry, the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League, the Human Rights Campaign, Equality Virginia, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the Fairfax County Health Literacy Initiative (representing the Fairfax County Public Health Department, the Fairfax County Public Library, the Inova Health Care System, and many other community organizations) have expressed strong interest in participating in this event.
